Kyle Macloughlin
Kyle’s bear outfit is far chicer than the Prada getup. (Sorry Muccia.) We were shooting fun short films for Kyle Maclachlan’s wine label: Pursued By Bear. I may be bias, but the wine is killer, the bear is not? I have news for you, comedy is hard!
Andre Leon Talley
Farewell Andre. You will be missed.
Interviewing Andre Leon Talley for my upcoming film on Vogue Fashion Editor, Polly Mellen (After the show, Polly and Candy Pratts Price haggled over who would get the scalloped-hem pants). I asked Andre, “What do you ‘see’ at a fashion show? What are you thinking?” and showing excerpts from Marc Jacobs’s 1999 Spring Show. What is going through the heads of fashion editors? Andre remembers the show perfectly and deconstructs the looks and the vibe as only he can. Plus a shout out to fabulous Shalom Harlow. And of course he demanded to see his bestie, Naomi Campbell.
People like Andre and Polly elevate fashion, and this is what my film on Polly Mellen explores. A bygone era and lessons that these exceptional people can teach as we go forward. A wake up call for creatives everywhere.
Front row luminaries: Linda Wells, Bill Cunningham, Ricky Vider, Billy Norwich, Gabé Doppelt, Michael Roberts, Joe Zee, Camilla Nickerson, Hamish Bowles, Kate Betts, Paul Cavaco, Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington.
“Shape, combinations of fabrics, texture and color. I’m looking for the sophistication and the refinement and the restraint and control of [Marc’s] point of view. And his point of view is a pale palette.”
“The shoes are flat; the hair is relaxed. The volume is very loose yet controlled. It’s a very sophisticated gray.”
Enter Shalom Harlow. We don’t know what was in her head, but we know Andre loves her.
“She was a great model. Superb, superb.”
“We’re looking for what is new.”
Audrey Marnay in the iconic scalloped skirt.
“This was very important in 1999. The scallop hem, that was very new with the drawstring waistline and a little poor boy’s T-shirt.”
Marc walks out; the show is done. End of clip.
“Where’s Naomi, find me Naomi.”
– From my upcoming film on the fashion legend Polly Mellen.
Doug’s 25 Years of Fashion History: Keanu Reeves
The Matrix was a distant gleam in Keanu’s eye. Shooting for Marc Balet / Interview Magazine. These ‘hot’ items often vanish — not this kid. He was so open, easy and frisky. No handlers or publicists. Later Reeves said, “I should’ve brought my kilt.” I was like, “What!?…No way! Go get it!” He came back the next day in said kilt. I never asked him what the kilt was. Was he Scottish? Early adopter? What we do know is what kind of underwear he wears. Did you know Keanu is Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English, Irish and Portuguese descent!
Doug’s 25 Years of Fashion History:
Manolo Blahnik CFDA Award
I’m thrilled to be working with the absolute powerhouse Iman on the forthcoming YouTube Originals documentary series Supreme Models: Black Women who Revolutionized Fashion.
Aside from being an incredible model and a total icon– who knew she could “camp it up” with such great comedic chops? I learned that when we worked together on this 1999 video for Manolo Blahnik’s Fashion award for the CFDA, and also featuring appearances by Caroline Murphy, Fran Lebowitz, Joey Arias and Barney (the purple dinosaur) sitting with Anna Wintour (well, actually an Anna-look-alike.)
Can’t wait to see what Iman does next!
Doug’s 25 Years of Fashion History:
Supreme Models
I’m thrilled to be a part of the amazing team working on Supreme Models: Iconic Black Women Who Revolutionized Fashion, with RJ Cutler, Jane Cha Cutler, Marcellas Reynolds, Iman, Rolake A Bamgbose Whitaker, Donny Jackson, Trevor Smith, and everyone over at YouTube Originals.
To be a part of telling the stories of these incredible women is something I can only describe as “major”!
I can’t wait to pay tribute to some of my favorite people.
I’ve worked with so many of the incredible women featured in the Supreme Models book over the years, like in 1998, when I was fortunate enough to accompany the inimitable and forever iconic Naomi Campbell on a trip to South Africa to meet with President Nelson Mandela. You can check out a fabulous moment from that film here.
